Financial metrics are not enough
Bed occupancy, length of stay, emergency throughput, theatre utilisation, diagnostics turnaround and labour cost influence one another. A short-term cost reduction that worsens care quality or patient safety is not sustainable operational improvement.
Recommended performance dimensions
Service and patient flow: outpatient, emergency, admissions, discharge and waiting time.
Capacity and resources: theatres, imaging, laboratories and critical equipment.
Workforce and productivity: shift coverage, skills, overtime and staffing costs.
Quality, risk and compliance: patient safety, staffing adequacy and applicable clinical requirements.
Finance and sustainability: unit cost of care, revenue mix, resource commitments and budget variance.
Fair comparison across campuses
Hospitals differ in scale, patient acuity, case mix, service mix and information maturity. Comparative performance views should use peer groups, meaningful risk adjustment and transparent metric definitions; a superficial ranking can be misleading.
From the executive view to frontline improvement
Let leadership dashboards drill into departments, shifts and responsible workflows. Connect exceptions with ownership, response deadlines and review of results. Where data quality is weak, show the limitations instead of publishing apparently precise numbers.
