Begin with management decisions, not metrics
Identify what the CEO, COO, CIO and business leaders need to decide. Then structure Outcome, Driver and Control measures around those decisions, with clear ownership and accountability.
A shared, auditable KPI dictionary
Every KPI should have an agreed business definition, calculation, numerator, denominator, event time, source, accountable owner, exception rules and management purpose. Consistency across systems is a prerequisite for trust.
Embed dashboards in operating cadence
Important signals must connect to causes, business impact, owners and review schedules. Dashboard value is measured by the quality and speed of response—not the number of charts published.
Measure the value of the work itself
Select metrics for service quality, cost, capacity, cycle time, defects and risk. Preserve baselines, observation periods, external conditions and intervention records when assessing impact.
Measure the outcome. Verify the improvement.
Recommendations must account for operating constraints, data reliability, ownership and agreed acceptance measures before they become workable business solutions.
